Land Cover Map
The objective of this Work Package is to produce a new version of the Land Cover Map, providing high-quality stock estimates of UK land cover (shown as Broad Habitats). The map is based on a combination of Earth Observation data, digital cartography and other information.
Special features of Land Cover Map 2007 include:
- Integration of new datasets as part of the spatial framework – including Ordnance Survey MasterMap, the Rural Land Registry and the Welsh and Scottish Land Parcel Information Systems.
- High-tech ground reconnaissance and quality control – including use of both hand-held and vehicle-mounted GPS devices to record land cover types against an accurate satellite image.
The outputs of this Work Package will include:
- A comprehensive dataset, showing the stock and distribution of land cover within the UK.
- Fully documented summary information for the Countryside Information System (CIS), provided at 1km spatial resolution.
