Results & data from the survey

The results of Countryside Survey 2000 will be widely disseminated in a range of formats. The CS2000 web site provides details of the data available and should be your starting point for accessing CS2000 data. On this page you'll find information about:

Data Access Policy
Data are provided according to a Data Access Policy agreed between the sponsors of CS2000. Details of this policy, which specifies three levels of data provision, are available by clicking here.

Data available from this web site

Go to CS2000 report The report, Accounting for Nature: assessing habitats in the UK countryside This report contains summary results from the field surveys of terrestrial and freshwater habitats and some soil analysis results.

The report is available in 3 formats: hard copy, Adobe® PDF file and HTML web pages. From the HTML version, you can access the data underlying many of the figures in the report.

Results of the survey of Broad Habitats and landscape features The results of the survey of Broad Habitats and landscape features are presented as a series of tables. These contain more detailed data than the tables in the main CS2000 report (above), and include standard errors and confidence intervals. Change data (i.e. comparing CS2000 results with those from the 1984 and 1990 surveys) are also included.

The data are also provided as downloadable comma delimited (CSV) files, which can be imported into spreadsheets and other software. These tables form the results section of the Module 1 final report.

CS2000 CIS files Many CS2000 results are available as files for use in the Countryside Information System. The files are freely available from this web site.

Final reports of CS2000 modules Each CS2000 module is required to produce a final report. These reports will be made available on this web site as they are produced. The final reports contain some results from the survey, and in many cases provide information on the methods used.

Using CS2000 data

CS2000 Data Catalogue The CS2000 Data Catalogue provides information about the data sets created during the CS2000 programme.

Countryside Information System (CIS)

CIS v 6.0 is a powerful application that enables the user to view and analyse sample and census data at a resolution of 1km square, for Great Britain and Northern Ireland. A number of CS2000 datasets have been converted to CIS compatible files.

Modular Analysis of Vegetation Information System (MAVIS) MAVIS is a programme for analysis of vegetation data using different types of classifications developed for Great Britain. These include the Countryside Vegetation System (CVS) and other measures, such as fertility and competitor scores, as used in Countryside Survey 2000. MAVIS also includes classification programmes for the National Vegetation Classification (NVC). MAVIS can be downloaded for free.

The CS2000 Scientific Support Service

The CS2000 Scientific Support Service can carry out ad-hoc analyses or provide data which are not available in summary or CIS form. Potential users of the CS2000 Scientific Support Service should first use the CS2000 Data catalogue to determine the data sets available.
