CIS files download CS2000 data for use in the Countryside Information System

Introduction

The Countryside Information System (CIS) is a software package that allows the user to view and analyse spatial data relating to the countryside of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. A wide range of datasets are available, based on both census and sample surveys. A number of datasets from CS2000 and previous Countryside Surveys are available in CIS format.

Downloading CS2000 CIS data files is simple. CIS files may be downloaded from the table below by either groups of files or as individual files.

Select main file group

The CIS files are grouped into different types of data. To download a single file, select the main group of files you are interested in from the menu below. This will take you to the next step, where you can download individual files.

Alternatively, to download the most recent versions of all the files in a group, click on the Zip icon in the table below (see explanation of WinZip files below).

WinZip files

Most of the CIS files are quite small, and are provided in an uncompressed format. However, Some large files, or groups of related files are provided as WinZip files, and are indicated by the icon. You will need to have WinZip installed on your computer in order to unpack these files. To download an evaluation version of WinZip, click here:

Data type	Description	WinZip  files
Census files
Core file	This is the ITE Land Classification file, ITE LCr.ccf. The CIS will function without ITE LCr.ccf, but the sample files will not show the correct results unless it or its equivalent is put in the same directory as them and they are linked. You need only download it once, if you do not already have it. When you download other files from this web site, copy the uncompressed core file into any folders you create. ITE LCr.ccf need only be present in folders where CS2000 40-class sample files are being used. Click the Zip! icon to the right to download this file.
Land Cover Map	CIS versions of the Land Cover Map. Currently contains the Land Cover Map 2000 map of Broad Habitats for Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
Regions	Regional classification files. Currently contains the Environmental Zone classifications.
Sample files
Broad Habitat Areas (BH)	Includes estimates of stock and change of Broad Habitats, derived from Countryside Survey sample survey data. Data are available from the 1984, 1990 and 1998 (i.e. CS2000) surveys.
Main Land Cover Types (MLCT)	Includes estimates of stock and change for the Main Land Cover Types (Arable, Broadleaf woodland, Conifer woodland, Improved grass, Neutral grass and Urban). Data are available for 1990 and 1998.
Linear features	Includes estimates of stock and change in length of linear features such as hedges, walls, fences and lines of trees. Estimates are available for 1984, 1990 and 1998, derived from Countryside Survey 2000 sample survey data.
